Alpine summer with kids: cable cars, lakes and adventure parks

An Alpine summer with kids is pure freedom: cable cars up to the peaks, cold clear lakes, summer toboggan runs and adventure parks in the forest. In mid-August the mountains are green, the lakes are warm enough for a quick swim and almost every resort has a full programme for families. Here are ten top spots in Switzerland, Austria, Germany and Italy.
Why an Alpine summer with kids is so much fun
Kids love the Alps in summer because every day feels like an adventure: riding a gondola, spotting marmots, throwing stones into a lake and racing down a toboggan run. Many ski resorts turn into summer playgrounds, with themed trails, water play and rope parks at the top station. Cable cars make big views possible even for small legs.
Which ages it suits
Cable cars and lake walks work for all ages; rope parks, gorges and longer hikes are best from about five or six.
| Age | Best activities | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| 0–3 | cable cars, lake promenades, mountain playgrounds | take a carrier and a sun hat |
| 4–7 | themed trails, toboggan runs with a parent, paddling | short hikes with a hut as the goal |
| 8–12 | rope parks, gorges, longer hikes | let them plan part of the route |
| 13+ | via ferrata for beginners, mountain bikes | book a guide for new sports |

Switzerland
Pilatus near Lucerne combines the world's steepest cogwheel railway with a gondola, and at Fräkmüntegg there is a rope park and a summer toboggan run. Across the lake, Rigi has easy panoramic paths and playgrounds. In the Jungfrau Region, the gondola to First above Grindelwald leads to a cliff walk and an easy hike to a mountain lake.
Austria
Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis is just as family-friendly in summer as in winter, with themed adventure areas on the mountain. The Zillertal valley has many family cable cars with playgrounds and water parks at the top. The Achensee is Tyrol's largest lake, with boat trips and paddling spots. Near Salzburg, the historic Schafbergbahn climbs slowly above Lake Wolfgang, a big hit with train fans.
Germany and Italy
From Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the Zugspitze cable car takes you to Germany's highest peak, with snow even in August. Down in the valley, the Partnachklamm is a dramatic gorge with a path cut into the rock; children need to walk on their own. On Lake Garda, the Funivie del Baldo rotating cable car goes from Malcesine up to Monte Baldo.
Safety and kit
Mountain weather changes fast, so pack layers and check the forecast every morning.
- Sun cream, sunglasses and hats; the sun is stronger at altitude
- A warm layer and rain jacket, even on hot days
- Good shoes with grip for gorges and trails
- Water and snacks in every backpack
- A carrier for under-threes on longer walks
Thunderstorms are common in August afternoons, so plan high-altitude trips for the morning.
Snacks and stops on the way
Mountain huts are part of the fun: soup, pasta, Kaiserschmarrn and apple strudel make every hike worth it. Many huts have small playgrounds or animals. Picnics by the lake are easy and cheap. Find family-friendly restaurants in the valleys on the Kid.ooo map.
Parent tip
Buy a regional guest card or multi-day lift pass if you plan several cable car trips; it often pays off after two or three rides. Many hotels include a guest card with free or discounted lifts and buses. Also, mix one big excursion with one lazy lake day.

Frequently asked questions
Where should families go in the Alps in summer?
Central Switzerland around Lucerne, Tyrol in Austria, the Bavarian Alps and Lake Garda in Italy are all great choices. They combine cable cars, lakes for swimming and adventure parks within short distances.
Are Alpine cable cars suitable for babies and toddlers?
Yes, most modern cable cars and mountain railways take prams and are a comfortable way to reach the mountains. At high altitude, protect small children from strong sun and cold wind, and avoid going too high with babies.
What age can kids do summer toboggan runs and rope parks?
Summer toboggans usually let small children ride with an adult and older kids alone from a certain age or height. Rope parks often have special courses for children from about four, with height limits for the bigger routes.
Are the Alps worth it in August with kids?
Yes, but it is the busiest month. Start early in the morning, book popular cable cars online and plan a quiet lake day between bigger excursions.
