Budget family skiing: Bulgaria, Slovakia and Poland

Published · Updated · 6 min read

Budget family skiing is very possible in Europe: in Bulgaria, Slovakia and Poland, lift passes, ski schools and family stays often cost much less than in the Alps. With winter school holidays underway across Europe, here are eight good-value resorts with gentle slopes, ski kindergartens and plenty to do off the piste. We also cover getting there, where to stay and eat, and what to do on a stormy day.

Why now: winter school holidays

Mid-February is peak time for school winter holidays in many countries, so it pays to choose good-value resorts with family infrastructure. Alpine prices rise sharply in these weeks, while resorts in Bulgaria, Slovakia and Poland stay more affordable. If you are not tied to school dates, March often brings sunny days, good snow and lower prices.

Top 8 resorts for budget family skiing

Bulgaria has the biggest ski areas of the three, Slovakia has the best mix of slopes and water parks, and Poland has many small, easy resorts.

Bulgaria

Bansko in the Pirin mountains is Bulgaria's best-known resort. A long gondola takes you from town to the beginner area, and the old town has cosy restaurants. Pamporovo in the Rhodope mountains is known for gentle, sunny slopes that suit beginners and young children. Visit Bulgaria has more ideas for winter trips.

Slovakia

Jasná Nízke Tatry is Slovakia's largest resort, with modern lifts, a children's ski area and slopes on both sides of the Chopok mountain. Park Snow Donovaly is great for small children, with a fun park, snow tubing and easy runs. In the High Tatras, Vysoké Tatry resorts at Tatranská Lomnica and Štrbské Pleso combine skiing with dramatic mountain views.

Poland

Białka Tatrzańska near Zakopane has many wide, easy runs and thermal pools nearby. The Szczyrk Mountain Resort in the Silesian Beskids has modern lifts and is easy to reach from Kraków and Katowice. Zieleniec in Lower Silesia is known for good snow and gentle slopes.

Getting there with kids: car, train and stops

Fly to Sofia, Plovdiv, Kraków or Poprad, or drive if you live in Central Europe.

  • Bulgaria: fly to Sofia (for Bansko) or Plovdiv (for Pamporovo) and book a transfer with child seats.
  • Slovakia: the Tatras and Jasná are reachable by train via Poprad or Liptovský Mikuláš, or by car from Vienna, Budapest, Kraków and Prague.
  • Poland: Kraków airport is about two hours from Białka and Szczyrk. Roads to Zakopane can be very busy on Saturdays.
  • By car: carry snow chains, check winter tyre rules and buy road vignettes where needed.

Where to stay: family-friendly stays

Apartments and family hotels with pools are good value in all three countries. In Bansko, stay close to the gondola. In Slovakia and Poland, guesthouses and apartments near the lifts are often cheaper than hotels and come with a kitchen. Ask for cots, high chairs and a ski room.

Where to eat with kids

Mountain food in all three countries is filling and child-friendly: soups, pancakes, potato dishes and grilled meat. In Bulgaria, try banitsa, a cheese pastry, and in Slovakia, bryndzové halušky, potato dumplings with sheep cheese. In Poland, pierogi and pancakes are favourites. Huts on the slopes are cheaper than in the Alps.

Rainy-day plan B

When the weather turns, head to a thermal pool or water park; there are many near the mountains. Tatralandia near Liptovský Mikuláš is one of Central Europe's biggest water parks, with indoor pools open all winter. Near Białka Tatrzańska and Zakopane there are several thermal baths. In Bansko, many hotels have spas and indoor pools. More winter ideas are in our winter adventures with kids guide.

Packing checklist

Pack warm layers and rent the bulky gear on the spot; rental is cheap in these resorts.

  • Thermal base layers and wool socks
  • Waterproof ski jacket, trousers and two pairs of mittens
  • Helmet and goggles (or rent them)
  • Sun cream and lip balm
  • Swimwear for pools and thermal baths
  • Snacks and a small thermos
  • Some cash in local currency (lev in Bulgaria, euro in Slovakia, zloty in Poland) for small huts and car parks

Frequently asked questions

Where is the cheapest skiing in Europe for families?

Bulgaria, Slovakia and Poland are among the best-value countries, with lower lift pass, ski school and accommodation prices than the Alps. Bansko and Pamporovo in Bulgaria, Jasná in Slovakia and Białka Tatrzańska in Poland are popular family choices.

Is Bansko good for beginners and kids?

Yes. Bansko has a long gondola from town to the main beginner area, plenty of ski schools and many family hotels. The lower slopes can be busy, so book ski school early in peak weeks.

Are Slovak and Polish ski resorts good for small children?

Yes. Resorts like Jasná, Park Snow Donovaly, Białka Tatrzańska and Szczyrk have nursery slopes, moving carpets and ski kindergartens. They are smaller than Alpine resorts, which makes them easy to manage with little kids.

When is the best time for a cheap ski trip?

January and March are usually cheaper than February, when many school winter holidays take place. Snow is normally good in all three months at higher resorts.
