Lapland with kids: meeting Santa in Rovaniemi

Published · 5 min read

Lapland with kids is a once-in-a-childhood adventure: snow, reindeer, husky rides and a real visit to Santa in his village on the Arctic Circle. Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland, is the easiest place to start, with direct flights in winter and most attractions within a short drive. Here are nine family activities, which ages they suit and how to stay warm.

Why Lapland with kids feels so special

Children love Lapland because it looks exactly like a Christmas story: deep snow, wooden cabins, reindeer and Santa himself. The days around Christmas are short and blue, and the lights make everything feel magical. Even the cold becomes part of the fun when there are sledges, snow forts and hot berry juice.

For parents, Rovaniemi is practical. The airport is small, the town is compact and many tours pick you up from your hotel.

Which ages it suits

The magic years are about three to eight, but older kids and teens love the outdoor adventures too.

Meeting Santa

Santa Claus Village sits right on the Arctic Circle. Children can visit Santa in his office, send a postcard from Santa's main post office and jump over the white line that marks the Arctic Circle. SantaPark Arctic World is an underground Christmas world in a cave, with an elf school, gingerbread baking and an ice gallery.

Snow, huskies and reindeer

Snowman World in Santa Claus Village has ice slides and snow sculptures. For a husky or reindeer ride, an experienced operator like Lapland Safaris provides warm overalls and boots and takes children from a young age as passengers. The Ounasvaara hill on the edge of town has gentle ski slopes and sledging.

Indoor and wildlife

For a warm break, the Arktikum museum and science centre explains life in the Arctic and the northern lights, and the Pilke Science Centre next door has hands-on exhibits about forests. A day trip to Ranua Wildlife Park lets kids see polar bears, lynx and other Arctic animals.

Safety and kit

Dress children in three layers, keep them moving and come indoors before they get cold.

  • Base layer: merino wool or thermal underwear, never cotton.
  • Middle layer: fleece or wool sweater.
  • Outer layer: windproof snowsuit, warm boots, mittens and a balaclava.
  • Extras: hand and toe warmers, lip balm and a spare pair of mittens.
  • Check often: look at cheeks, noses and fingers for white patches, a sign of frostbite.

Most safari companies lend thermal overalls and boots, which saves a lot of luggage.

Snacks and stops on the way

Take warm drinks and snacks on every outing, because cold air makes children hungry fast. Many safaris include a stop at a campfire hut with hot berry juice and sausages. In town, cafés serve cinnamon buns and salmon soup, which kids usually like.

Parent tip

Plan one big activity per day and leave space for simple snow play near your cabin. Children often remember the snowball fight and the sledge ride as much as the expensive tours. Book Santa visits and safaris in the morning, when kids are fresh.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best age to take kids to Lapland to meet Santa?

Most families find that ages three to eight are the magic years, when children fully believe in Santa and can handle the cold. Babies and toddlers can come too, but keep outdoor time short and plan around naps.

Is it free to meet Santa in Rovaniemi?

Visiting Santa Claus Village and meeting Santa in his office is free, but official photos and videos cost extra. SantaPark, safaris and other attractions charge an entry fee.

How cold is Rovaniemi in December?

December temperatures are often between minus 5 and minus 20 degrees Celsius and can drop lower. Daylight lasts only a few hours around Christmas, so plan outdoor activities for the middle of the day.

Can kids see the northern lights in Lapland?

Yes, on clear, dark nights between late August and early April. Sightings are never guaranteed, so treat them as a bonus, and look for an organised trip away from the city lights for the best chance.
