Playgrounds & soft play

Beach playgrounds and seaside promenades across Europe

Published · 6 min read

Beach playgrounds and seaside promenades are the secret to a happy beach holiday: when children tire of sand and waves, a playground with a sea view and a long flat walk save the day. In July, families across Europe head to the coast. Here are 11 seaside favourites with great playgrounds and promenades, from Nice and Ostend to Sopot and Cascais.

When beach playgrounds help most

Beach playgrounds are perfect for the late afternoon, when the sun is lower and kids need something new after a day of swimming. Promenades are great for evening walks with prams, scooters and balance bikes. On windy or cloudy days, they turn a grey beach day into a fun outing.

  • Toddlers (1–3): small playgrounds with sand, swings and shade.
  • Preschoolers (3–6): climbing frames, water play and scooter rides on the promenade.
  • School kids (6–12): big adventure playgrounds, piers and bike rides.
  • Teens: skate parks, beach volleyball and seaside amusements.

In July and August, the hottest hours are between noon and four. That is the time for a long lunch, a nap or an indoor break. Playgrounds and promenades come alive again in the early evening, when locals come out for a walk, an ice cream and a last swim.

France and Belgium

Explore Nice Côte d'Azur has information on the Promenade du Paillon, a green park in the city centre with a large playground of giant sea creatures and a water mirror, just a few steps from the famous Promenade des Anglais. In Belgium, Visit Oostende covers Ostend's long seafront, beach play areas and the coastal tram that runs along the whole Belgian coast. At De Panne, the wide beach is great for kites, and Plopsaland theme park is nearby.

Italy and Spain

Rimini and Lignano Sabbiadoro have beach clubs with their own playgrounds, so kids can play while parents relax under an umbrella. Visit Valencia has tips for the Malvarrosa promenade and the Turia Gardens with Gulliver Park. On the Costa Daurada, Salou's palm-lined promenade has several play areas.

Portugal, Poland, Germany and the UK

In Portugal, Visit Cascais describes the seafront walk from Cascais to Estoril, with small beaches along the way. Sopot on the Baltic is famous for one of the longest wooden piers in Europe. In Germany, the Binzer Bucht on Rügen island has an elegant promenade and pier. In England, Visit Brighton covers the pier and seafront playgrounds.

What to look for: safety, shade, toilets, café

A good seaside playground has shade, soft ground, toilets nearby and a café or kiosk with a view.

  • Shade: essential in July; look for trees, sails or umbrellas.
  • Hot equipment: metal slides can burn little legs in the afternoon sun.
  • Fencing: a fence between the playground and the road or water is reassuring.
  • Toilets and showers: beach clubs and promenades often have them.
  • Water: refill bottles at fountains where available.

Toddlers vs. older kids

Toddlers are happiest in small, shaded playgrounds near the sand, while older kids want big climbing frames, piers and bikes. For little ones, the beach-club playgrounds in Rimini and Lignano are ideal. Older children will love Nice's sea-creature playground, the Sopot pier and bike rides along the Belgian coast. For siblings of different ages, choose a place where a small fenced playground and a bigger adventure area are next to each other, so one parent can keep an eye on both while the other gets the coffee.

Combine it with a day out or lunch

Plan the beach in the morning, a long lunch in the shade and the playground and promenade in the late afternoon. Many promenades have ice cream kiosks and family restaurants. Frequently asked questions

Which European seaside towns have the best playgrounds?

Nice has a large sea-creature playground in the Promenade du Paillon park, Ostend and the Belgian coast have many beach play areas, and Italian resorts like Rimini and Lignano have playgrounds in almost every beach club.

Are seaside promenades good with a pram?

Yes, most are wide, flat and paved, which makes them ideal for prams, scooters and balance bikes. Busy evenings can be crowded, so morning walks are calmer.

What should I pack for a beach playground day?

Sun cream, hats, water shoes, plenty of water and a change of clothes. Metal slides can get very hot in July, so check them before small children use them.

What can kids do on the coast when it rains?

Look for indoor play centres, aquariums and indoor pools in seaside towns. Many resorts also have covered play areas or museums, and a short train ride along the coast is fun too.
