Splash parks and water playgrounds across Europe

Water playgrounds are the best way to cool down with kids in a European city: free fountains, sprinklers and shallow pools where even toddlers can play safely. With summer starting, we have picked 14 favourites, from free city splash parks in Vienna, Bordeaux and Copenhagen to big water parks in Prague, Poreč and near Munich. Many of them work as rainy day plans too.
When water playgrounds help most
Splash parks are perfect on hot city days, when museums feel too much and the beach is too far. They need no swimming skills, so they suit babies, toddlers and preschoolers. Bigger water parks with slides are better for school-age kids and teens.
- Babies and toddlers (0–3): shallow fountains and sprinklers, always with an adult close by.
- Preschoolers (3–6): pumps, water channels and small slides.
- School kids (6–12): water parks, wave pools and harbour baths.
- Teens: big slides, lake swimming and diving platforms.
Early summer is a great time to try them. In June, outdoor water playgrounds open for the season, school holidays have not started everywhere yet, and weekday mornings are often quiet. In July and August, go early or late in the day, when the sun is lower and the crowds are smaller.

Free city water playgrounds
The Wasserspielplatz Donauinsel on Vienna's Danube Island is a large water playground with streams, dams and pumps. In Bordeaux, the Miroir d'eau opposite the Place de la Bourse is a huge, thin sheet of water with mist jets, where children run and splash. In London, the Diana Memorial Fountain in Hyde Park lets kids sit on the edge and cool their feet in the flowing water (walking in the fountain is not allowed).
In Paris, the jumping fountains in the Parc André Citroën are a favourite on hot days. In Lisbon, the waterfront Parque das Nações has water features near the Oceanário. In Copenhagen, the harbour baths at Islands Brygge have shallow children's pools next to the deeper ones. In Zurich, the Lake Zurich bathing spots and lidos make summer swims easy.
Water parks and thermal spas
Therme Erding near Munich is one of the largest thermal spas in the world, with a slide park for kids. Aquapalace Praha is a huge indoor water park just outside Prague. On the Croatian coast, Aquacolors Poreč is a big outdoor water park, and in Spain the PortAventura Caribe Aquatic Park is next to the theme park. In Paris, Aquaboulevard has indoor and outdoor pools, Aquaworld Budapest has a big indoor hall, and Tatralandia in Slovakia combines outdoor and indoor pools.

What to look for: safety, shade, toilets, café
A good splash park has non-slip ground, shade nearby, toilets and changing rooms, and a café or kiosk.
- Safety: shallow water still needs constant supervision.
- Shade: trees or sails for breaks, as wet skin burns quickly.
- Changing rooms and toilets: essential for swim nappies and dry clothes.
- Water shoes: many surfaces get hot or slippery.
- Food: a kiosk helps, but bring snacks and water bottles.
Toddlers vs. older kids
Toddlers are happiest at shallow fountains and small water playgrounds, while older kids want slides and waves. For under-fours, the Donauinsel, the Miroir d'eau and the Diana Memorial Fountain are ideal. Check the age and height limits for slides at water parks before you pay.
For siblings of different ages, choose water parks with separate kids' areas, like Aquapalace Praha, Tatralandia or Therme Erding.
Combine it with a day out or lunch
Plan water play for the hottest part of the day and a museum or shady lunch before or after. In Bordeaux, the Miroir d'eau sits right by the old town. In Lisbon, combine Parque das Nações with the Oceanário. Find kid-friendly restaurants nearby on the Kid.ooo map.
