Cycling holidays with kids: Danube Cycle Path & Lake Constance

Published · 5 min read

Cycling holidays with kids work best on flat, car-free routes with short distances between villages, and the Danube Cycle Path and Lake Constance are Europe's classics. May is the start of the cycling season, with long days, green landscapes and fewer people than in summer. Here are nine family-friendly stages with distances, plus tips on kit, safety and snacks.

Why cycling holidays with kids work so well

Children love cycling holidays because every day is a small adventure: ferries, castles, swimming spots and ice cream stops. On a bike, the journey is part of the fun, and kids feel proud of every kilometre. Parents love the slow pace, the scenery and the fact that the luggage can travel ahead by van.

Which ages it suits

Babies and toddlers can ride in a trailer, five- to eight-year-olds on a tag-along or their own bike for short stages, and older kids can cycle full days.

9 family stages with distance and difficulty

The Austrian Danube between Passau and Vienna is flatter and calmer; Lake Constance adds lake swimming, three countries and great attractions. Distances are approximate. Check routes, ferries and bike rental on the official websites.

The Danube Cycle Path

Donauregion Oberösterreich has route tips for the Upper Austrian section, including the famous Schlögen loop, where the river makes a dramatic turn. Further east, Donau Niederösterreich covers the Wachau valley, with vineyards, apricot orchards and small ferries that kids love. Start or end your Wachau day at Stift Melk, a huge golden abbey above the river.

Lake Constance

Bodensee is the official tourism portal for the lake shared by Germany, Austria and Switzerland, with maps of the cycle path. In Friedrichshafen, the Zeppelin Museum shows a full-size section of an airship. The Pfahlbauten Unteruhldingen are reconstructed stilt houses from the Stone and Bronze Ages, standing in the water. The flower island Insel Mainau has gardens, a butterfly house and a big playground. For a day off the bike, the Rheinfall near Schaffhausen is Europe's most powerful waterfall, and the Ravensburger Spieleland theme park is a short drive from the lake.

Safety and kit

Helmets for everyone, a well-fitted bike and short stages are the basis of a happy family ride.

  • Helmets, bright clothing and good lights
  • Rain jackets and a warm layer
  • A repair kit, pump and spare inner tube
  • Sun cream, hats and plenty of water
  • A lock for breaks in villages
  • Padded shorts or a soft saddle for longer days

Ride in a line with one adult in front and one behind, and walk across busy roads.

Snacks and stops on the way

Plan a snack every hour and lunch at a riverside inn or lake beach. Along the Danube, apricot dumplings and fresh juices from the Wachau are local favourites. Around Lake Constance, there are many beach cafés and ice cream kiosks. Find family-friendly restaurants on the Kid.ooo map.

Parent tip

Book luggage transport between hotels and keep the first day short. Kids need time to get used to the bike and the routine. Use ferries and trains to shorten long days. Many families also mix cycling days with rest days at a lake or playground.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Danube Cycle Path suitable for children?

Yes, the Austrian section between Passau and Vienna is one of the most family-friendly long-distance routes in Europe. It is almost flat, mostly on separate cycle paths, and has many ferries, villages and playgrounds along the way.

How far can children cycle in a day?

Confident children of about eight to ten can often manage 20 to 40 km a day on flat paths with breaks. Younger kids in a trailer or on a tag-along bike depend on the adult's pace, but plan short days with lots of stops.

Can you cycle around Lake Constance with kids?

Yes. The full loop is about 260 km, but families usually cycle shorter sections, such as Bregenz to Lindau or Friedrichshafen to Meersburg, and use ferries and trains to skip parts.

Do I need to bring our own bikes?

No. Bike rental shops along both routes rent children's bikes, trailers, tag-alongs and e-bikes, and many offer one-way rental and luggage transport between hotels.
